The importance and fun of patterns in your design
A lot of people are afraid to mix different patterns in their design, but as long as you think of certain tips and tricks it’s actually a lot of fun! It brings so much more depth, movement and fun into your design and space. Patterns can come in many, many forms. Think of fabrics, upholstery and tiles, but how do we make those multiple patterns work together? The secret is to work with scale, colour schemes and different shapes. So let’s get in to it!
To create a cohesive design plan, it’s a good idea to start with defining your colour scheme. When you’re at the point of choosing your fabrics, it makes it so much easier to choose with that specific colour scheme in mind. You can also approach this the other way around, by starting with the fabric, but I prefer to start with your colour scheme.
Next up is scaling, different scales are key when combining different patterns to make sure they complement each other. Try to avoid only small or big patterns in one space. Mix it up! And last but not least, mixing up different styles of patterns. People get worried quite often and they’re afraid that it will be too much combining it all together. But let me tell you this, as long as you keep the palette cohesive you don’t have a lot to worry about.
